Shaped by Feedback: Slowing Down to Listen

Devotional week 28

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." James 1:19 NIV

Receiving feedback is rarely easy. Our natural instinct is often to defend ourselves, justify our choices, or quietly dismiss what’s been said. Yet God, in His wisdom, has designed community partly so that we might grow through one another’s observations—even when they sting.

James encourages us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. This order matters. Listening first gives room for humility to flourish. It allows us to hear not only the person’s words but perhaps the whisper of God behind them, nudging us toward growth and Christlikeness.

Imagine what might change in our workplaces, teams, or studies if we became known as people who truly listened. Instead of being reactive, we could model a different way—responding with grace and an open heart. By slowing down, we give God space to shape us, using even uncomfortable feedback to refine our character.

Challenge

This week, when someone offers you feedback—whether gentle or pointed—pause before replying. Silently ask God, “What can I learn from this?” Let Him help you process your emotions and reveal areas where He might be inviting growth.

Prayer

Lord, help me to listen well. Guard my heart from defensiveness and pride. When I receive feedback, give me the courage to pause and the humility to learn. Use these moments to shape me more into the likeness of Christ. Amen.
