Ready for a difficult assignment?
Afghanistan tops the newly published list of the world’s worst persecutors of Christians. North Korea, Somalia, Libya, and Yemen follow close behind.
“It is impossible to live openly as a Christian in Afghanistan. Leaving Islam is considered shameful, and Christian converts face dire consequences if their new faith is discovered. Either they must flee the country or they will be killed. This was true before the Taliban takeover: the situation has become even more dangerous for believers this year,” says the recently published World Watch List from Open Doors.
Alternative justice
“If a Christian’s new faith is discovered, their family, clan or tribe has to save its honor by disowning the believer, or even killing them. This is widely considered to be justice. Alternatively, since leaving Islam is considered a sign of insanity, a Christian who has converted from Islam may be forcibly sectioned in a psychiatric hospital,” the report continues.
“The World Watch List is a calling for us to get down on our knees in prayer for our persecuted sisters and brothers,” says Tent International’s director, Steinar Opheim.
He is often encouraged after being in contact with Christians who are persecuted.
“Many persecuted believers have a commitment to Jesus and his kingdom that serves as an example to follow for all of us. Even if their lives are at risk, they continue to serve Jesus and share his love with others.”
Calling to go
Opheim sees the World Watch List as a calling to go.
“Jesus told us to go to all nations, no matter how difficult it can be. Christian professionals and businesspeople have access to, and can settle in, places where the church is persecuted. Thus, these are key groups God can utilize in difficult situations. Jesus met hatred with love. We are called to do the same,” says Opheim.
