Shaping Culture with Faith and Patience

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV)

My wife and I recently decided to buy one of those miniature block-building kits, similar to Lego, to unwind. We sorted the pieces by colour and shape. When opening the manual, we realised it would be more challenging than expected - not because of the tiny pieces, but because the instructions were hard to follow. Undeterred, we decided to give it a try. We worked through it layer by layer, and eventually, we built a small, charming fox. To our delight, the little plastic pet’s head and tail could even move!

Each small and seemingly insignificant piece plays a crucial role in constructing a block toy. With all its challenges, this process reminds us of the work of shaping culture in our workplaces. Just as we carefully assemble each layer of the toy, we, as Christians, can gradually influence the culture around us.

Workplace culture is a dynamic system, often filled with values and behaviours contrary to biblical principles. However, God is already present in these spaces, working and calling His children to be agents of change. Just as Paul seized the opportunity in Athens to reveal the true God, we are called to do the same in our contexts.

Being an agent of transformation requires discernment: where biblical values are clear, we stand firm. Where flexibility is possible, we adapt. Like yeast in dough, our influence, however small it may seem, can grow and transform the environment, reflecting the values of God’s Kingdom.

Challenge

This week, observe your workplace and identify small behaviours or practices you can impact. Whether through words, actions, or leading by example, choose one area where you can act as "yeast," bringing the culture of heaven to ear

Prayer

Lord, help me to be patient and persevering as I seek to shape my workplace according to Your values. Grant me the wisdom to discern where I should stand firm and where I can adapt, always pointing to You. Use me as yeast, transforming small actions into significant changes for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
